The Union grieves over the deaths of these children, and this dark chapter in our shared history in BC.
In the spirit of reconciliation we encourage members to learn more about the tragic legacy of the residential school system, the history of Indigenous peoples in this land, their culture and their resilience. Here are some places to start:
- The statement from the Office of the Chief of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation on whose unceded territory the school operated until 1978.
- This Indigenous Awareness Training program, and others for which you can use your Union training funds.
- The film Indian Horse, directed by Stephen Campanelli.
- The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.
To our many First Nations, Métis and Inuit members, we offer our empathy and shared sorrow.
